A large part of this is due to the fact that I completed my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University from 1970 to 1975) I have been a student of the liberal arts curriculum on the ground (Brown University) It is my belief that educational programs should incorporate studying art and other disciplines. This is not surprising to an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967 and PhD from UCLA)! This isn't a surprise since the ethnomusicology department located at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is located in the college of letters and Science's department of music. It's a pleasure to be able to combine many passions. Also, I like looking at the whole picture. It's an absolute pleasure to instruct graduate and undergraduate students. I'm a published with three of my books published: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing music and expressing culture. In addition, I have a variety of periods where I engage in mainly academic pursuits in addition to periods of administrative work to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chairperson of the Group for Asian Studies in 1999, and is now the as Chair of the Department of Music again).
